Injury Motor Vehicle Accident

On February 07, 2007 at 5:33 a.m., Fort Collins Police Services was notified of an injury accident at the intersection of Lemay and Trilby. When officers arrived on scene they found that a 2002 Subaru WRX had collided with a 1999 International semi truck. The semi tractor and trailer are owned and operated by New Barn Transport out of Denver.

The traffic lights at Trilby and Lemay were on flash at the time of the accident. East and westbound traffic had a flashing red light, while north and southbound traffic had a flashing yellow light. The Subaru was east on Trilby, and failed to yield the right of way to the International semi tractor and trailer that was North on Lemay. The vehicles collided in the middle of the intersection and both vehicles went through a concrete wall into the back yard of 6551 Finch Court. The International semi tractor hit the northwest corner of the house, causing structural damage to it. The homeowners were home at the time of the accident and were not injured.

The driver of the Subaru, Troy Diaz, was transported to Poudre Valley Hospital for various injuries, and still remains hospitalized. The driver of the International, Peter Hill, was also transported to Poudre Valley Hospital and was later released.

The Fort Collins Police C.R.A.S.H. (Collision Reconstruction and Scene Handling) Team responded to investigate. The intersection of Trilby and Lemay was closed for approximately 5 hours while police investigated.

Raising The Number Of Driving Hours Save Lives.
The longer off-duty time allows drivers to have more regular schedules and increases the potential for quality sleep. This is consistent with fatigue- and sleep-related studies considered in development of the rule that indicate the amount and quality of sleep a person receives has a strong influence on alertness.
